Healthy Skin for YOUR Wedding Day!

Healthy Skin for your Wedding Day – Dr. Rob America’s Fitness Doctor

The majority of people do not realize this but excess sugar is considered one of the main causes of premature aging. And the more sugar you eat, the more sugar you have entering your bloodstream. Over time, this can result in a process known as glycation, which is when a sugar molecule damages a protein molecule by sticking to it. The new molecules formed are called advanced glycation end products, or AGEs. AGEs damage collagen in skin, cartilage, and ligaments and promote a loss of elasticity. Wrinkles form and skin begins to look old, wrinkly and saggy.  You don’t want to look old, wrinkly and saggy on your wedding day, do you?

So, what’s a girl to do? It may seem impossible to reduce your sugar intake, but with a little awareness it can be done! The best approach is a gradual one. Right now, choose one thing that you know has sugar in it that you eat the most and give it up! Do you drink a lot of coffee? You can start by eliminating the amount of sugar in your daily coffee or use a substitute. As everyday passes, find another food or drink item you can eliminate from your diet.  That way you can decrease your sugar intake daily over time. Before you know it, you will have eliminated the majority of sugar from your daily life.  Truly Sweet!

Solution #1: Drink More Water! Water is absolutely vital for every process in the body and especially for your skin.  We’ll talk more about water shortly.

Solution #2: Eat More Soluble Fiber. Most women lack fiber in their diets – the average woman according to studies eats less than 15 grams of fiber a day. We are going to fix that by adding in a vital fruit that will have profound effects on your body and skin. You will be eating lots of crunchy, sweet apples.

Solution #3 Eat a Healthy Balanced Diet.  A healthy diet will help you look and feel your best on your wedding day. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins. The link between diet and acne is not completely clear, but some research suggests that a diet rich in vitamin C and low in unhealthy fats and processed or highly refined carbohydrates will promote younger, healthier looking skin.

Solution #4: Eat Healthy Fats.  Essential fatty acids are fats your body cannot live without. They are needed for numerous processes through out the body and are absolutely necessary to lose weight. Essential fats help keep your heart healthy, fight off inflammation, keep your hormones in balance and may prevent cancer. Healthy fats are also particularly important to people with inflammatory conditions such as eczema and acne, and also for people with dry skin. In your nutrition plan to get you to your day looking and feeling fabulous I have added these essential fats into your meals.  Just follow along.

Solution #5: Protect Yourself from the Sun.  Next to water, one of the most important ways to take care of your skin is to protect it from the sun. A lifetime of sun exposure can cause wrinkles, age spots and other skin problems.  Not to mention the increased risk of skin cancer.

Use sunscreen. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15. When you are outdoors, make sure to reapply sunscreen every two hours or more often if you are swimming

Find shade. Avoid the sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.  This is when the sun’s rays are at their strongest.

Wear protective clothing. Cover your skin with long-sleeved shirts, long pants and wide-brimmed hats. Also there is special sun-protective clothing, which is specifically designed to block ultraviolet rays.

Solution #6: Do Not Smoke.  Smoking makes your skin look older and wrinkly. Smoking narrows the tiny blood vessels in the outermost layers of skin, which decreases blood flow. Decreased blood flow means decreased oxygen and nutrients that are vitally important to skin health. Smoking also damages collagen and elastin, which are the fibers that give your skin its strength and elasticity.  We want you arriving to your wedding day looking young and fresh, not old and wrinkly.  If you smoke, the best way to protect your skin is to quit. Consult your health care provider for tips or treatments to help you stop smoking.
